I’m a Home Time Management Expert, Coach, and Speaker and I’m dedicating my life to helping others learn to save time on things they HAVE to do (e.g., cooking, cleaning, housework, and laundry) so they can spend it on things they WANT to do (spend more time with your spouse, kids, family/friends, and on yourself).
So… what qualifies ME to speak on Home Time Management?
I’ve been a single parent of 4 since the early 1990’s. I have great kids… trying at times… but overall, great.
Since the early/mid 1990’s I’ve been a Safety Director and Estimator/Project Manager in the field of construction in North Carolina and Florida. I bid the majority of military/commercial jobs as well as any of the residential jobs that require reading blueprints.
I didn’t start out in life being that great at Home Time Management. It was really something that I had to grow into out of necessity so that I could have sufficient time with the kids.
I really wanted my kids to have a semblance of a normal life… even while being raised in a single-parent home.
In 1997 I began to work at home and kept my then 1 year old with me. I actually took her on construction sites with me probably 95% of the time. She went to a babysitter for only a couple of hours each week.
Now, anyone who has a home office will tell you that it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Too often, the lines between home and work get blurred because you don’t “leave work behind” as you do with an office job.
As a matter of fact, for a work-a-holic like myself, it simply made bringing work home even more acceptable. Because of that… and many other reasons… if you have a home office in many ways you have to manage your time even more carefully.
During the day I would manage jobs:
Order materials, line up subcontractors, do billing with the bookkeeper, check on job progression, problem solve, schedule, attend job site meetings, meet with contractors concerning new jobs, etc. etc. etc. all with a baby on my hip (or toddling around) and 3 coming home on the school bus.
The problem was that…
Doing all that during the day meant that I had to work on blueprints at night and I can’t tell you how many times I literally fell asleep on top of blueprints.
I was not a good role model for my children on that dividing line between work and home.
So I resolved to change. I moved into “town” (I had lived 35 minutes out in the country) and that extra hour/day meant A LOT!
(Note: With the right home time management changes you can easily gain an extra hour/day… or more… without having to move.)

The kids had a pretty “normal” childhood. They were able to play sports/after school activities of all kinds including:
And probably a few more I’m forgetting.
Best of all, I was able to attend each and every game, play, meet, competition, etc.
So… How did I do it?
It really was a lot of things working together. For instance, when it came to the household chores I made sure everyone pitched in. The responsibility simply could not rest on my shoulders alone.
So… my older son who is 12 years older than the hipster kid would make sure the other kids did their chores after school (when he wasn’t practicing football or some other sport).
My older daughter who is 10 years older than the hipster one would either start or fully cook dinner every night starting when she was around 12 years old or so. This was in addition to her chores.
My younger son is 6 years older than hipster kid and spent more time and energy trying to get out of doing his chores than it would have taken to just do the darn things. Failing that, he just did them as crappily as he felt he could get away with. (More on how I handled that in the parenting articles.)
In 2003 I made a life-changing decision…
I decided I was tired of being an overpaid babysitter (in the construction industry) so I went back to college which presented lots more Home Time Management challenges. I was still helping my best friend with the bidding for his company, still unschooling the 2 youngest kids, and now had to find time for classes and studying.
On top of that I take a seizure control medication that causes memory problems.
I quickly learned the importance of mnemonics and many other study aids.
Most people would not disclose such personal things about themselves, but I think it’s important to know that when I say I struggled with something (such as being a college student while having a 7 year-old and 13 year-old on permanent summer vacation) you know you can believe me.
I thrived and excelled because I quickly started building on all of the home time management techniques I’d used throughout the years. I’d try new things and tweak the old ones until I created a system where mid-terms and finals weeks… traditionally the worst weeks in a semester… were actually much easier than many peoples’ normal day-to-day lives simply because I was so prepared.
I graduated with my BS in Psychology (no jokes, please) in 2005 with a 3.98 GPA and my MSW in 2009 with a 3.88 GPA.
I was in the top 1/2 of 1% of university students in the US.
I accomplished this by learning some serious studying techniques which I will share in the college speaking topics.
During the majority of my graduate school studies, I also helped care for 2 of my grandchildren (ages 3 and newborn) 5 nights/week while their mom worked at night. To make matters worse the newborn was sick from the day he was born until they put tubes in his ears at 9 months old.
Yes… I’ve learned a lot about making life easier in the past 30+ years.
